Gerry Carthy

$30.00 = Gerry Carthy, from Ireland and now 30 years in Santa Fe prefers to play a 14 fret cutaway nylon strung tenor tuned to G D AE otherwise known as ‘Irish Tuning’ - the tenor banjo in Irish music being tuned that way to facilitate playing jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, airs and harp music in the required keys for traditional music.

The workshop will introduce this style and tuning and show the way Carthy has adapted his tenor guitar style to showcase his interest in different genres - Irish tunes, American folk tunes, New Mexico ballads, standard jazz tunes and more ( he played tenor banjo in a Dixieland band for 10 years).

The unique 4 string technique he developed over the years is explained and demonstrated in the form of visual patterns based on 2 scales and simple variations that underlie the fingerings in most songs and tunes.

He sees his style as combining the Classical/Spanish guitar ‘sound’ applied to Irish music with tenor banjo and mandolin techniques added to the mix.
